Oct 18, Kathmandu -Tesla has unveiled a prototype of its next-generation Roadster at a special event in Texas, with CEO Elon Musk in attendance. The dramatic demonstration showcased a driverless car performing stunts, but questions remain about its flight capabilities, price and availability.
At a livestreamed event at SpaceX’s rocket testing facility in McGregor, Texas, the Roadster was shown climbing a large curved ramp, driving upside down, leaping into the air and completing a 180-degree turn before landing with the help of thrusters. No driver was inside during the demonstration.
Tesla claimed the car can accelerate from zero to about 96 kilometres per hour in 0.81 seconds. The company also cited a top speed of more than 370 km/h, 1,341 horsepower and a range of around 483 kilometres on a full charge.
Tesla is targeting 2028 to begin production, though it has not said when the car will go on sale to the public. Musk said the Roadster will be the only Tesla designed for people to drive themselves, while other models will be autonomous.
The company plans three versions: Performance, Thruster and Rocket. The Rocket version, Tesla said, will be available by invitation only.
