Oct 09, Kathmandu - The trial concerning the disappearance and presumed murder of Nepali nurse Mamta Kafle Bhatt took a highly emotional turn on its fourth day, as testimonies from her mother, a close friend, and police investigators tightened the case against the accused husband, Naresh Bhatt.
During the hearing at the Prince William County courthouse, seven witnesses took the stand, presenting a grim picture of domestic turmoil and compelling circumstantial evidence.
Mother's Heartbreaking Testimony
Gita Kafle, Mamta’s mother, delivered a tearful testimony through an interpreter, stating she traveled to the United States solely to find her missing daughter. She testified that she has not heard from Mamta since July 30, 2024. As she broke down in the courtroom—emphasizing that her independent daughter would never disappear without notifying her—the accused, Naresh Bhatt, was seen wiping his eyes and nose from the defendant's box. The defense attorneys declined to cross-examine Kafle.
History of Domestic Violence and Infidelity
Sarita Neupane, a close friend of Mamta, revealed a history of marital strife, physical abuse, and infidelity. According to her testimony:
In February 2024, Mamta sought refuge at Neupane's home for 19 days after a severe dispute sparked by messages from other women found on Naresh’s phone.
Mamta intended to file for divorce and retain custody of their one-year-old daughter, a move Naresh adamantly opposed.
Neupane presented video evidence to the court showing bruises on Mamta's face from alleged physical altercations.
Police Findings and Crime Scene Evidence
Investigating officers Detective Claudia Ventura and Sergeant Brady Pelath detailed how the probe quickly centered on Naresh. Recognizing Mamta's deep devotion to her baby, police immediately ruled out a voluntary departure, categorizing the case as an "involuntary disappearance" to expedite search warrants.
While Mamta's body has not yet been recovered, prosecutors argue she was murdered on July 30, 2024. Investigators detailed findings linking Naresh to the crime, including:
- Blood stains discovered in the couple's bedroom and bathroom.
- Surveillance of suspicious disposal of trash bags.
- Corroborating digital evidence.
Upcoming Proceedings
Naresh Bhatt continues to maintain his innocence. The fourth day of hearings concluded on Thursday afternoon. The trial will resume on Tuesday at 9:00 AM, where prosecutors are scheduled to present the remainder of Detective Ventura’s bodycam footage and additional digital evidence to the jury.
