Woman Survives Failed Lethal Injection in Tennessee, Now Walking in Hospital

Oct 08, Kathmandu - Christa Pike, who was hospitalized after a failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection in Tennessee, is now able to walk, according to a member of her legal team.

Pike has begun walking on her own inside her hospital room, though her mental state has not fully returned to normal. She is reportedly feeling somewhat “foggy.”

Speaking late Wednesday on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, lawyer Stephen Farrell said he had not spoken with Pike directly. However, information received by her legal team indicated that she was walking in the hospital.

The execution attempt took place last Wednesday. Pike was taken to hospital after it failed and remained unconscious for several days. Doctors tried to remove the injected chemicals from her body.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer. Experts and her legal team have described her recovery as extraordinary. Based on available information, she may be the first person known to have survived a failed lethal-injection execution.
