Nepal Proposes Digital System to Track Road Crashes and Speed Up Rescue

Oct 03, Kathmandu - The government plans to establish an integrated digital records system to collect reliable data on road accidents and improve the rescue of injured people.

A proposed Road Safety Bill, 2083, submitted to the Federal Parliament, would provide the legal basis for storing comprehensive accident information on a single platform. Section 33 of the bill outlines the proposed road accident records and injured-person rescue management system.

Under the proposal, the National Road Safety Council would establish and operate the system to support accident research, prevention efforts, systematic records of human and material losses, and more effective rescue operations.

Nepal Police would be responsible for entering accident information into the system first. Other relevant agencies—including rescue services, health institutions, insurance bodies, road-related agencies and local governments—would also be required to submit specified data.

The bill further proposes linking other government and non-government systems to the platform, allowing relevant data to be transferred automatically under prescribed procedures.

The integrated database is expected to give authorities more reliable information on accident numbers, injury treatment and insurance claim payments. It could also help curb irregularities, including fraudulent insurance claims.
