Oct 01, Kathmandu - Tamil Nadu has launched a scheme to give eligible newborns born at government health facilities a 1-gram, 22-carat gold ring.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the “Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam” scheme on September 28 at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. During the launch, he presented rings to several newborns.
The scheme covers eligible babies born at government hospitals and primary health centres across the state. According to government information, it applies to eligible infants born from June 22, 2026. To qualify, the mother must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu, have registered her pregnancy through the government system, and hold the required health identification card.
The state has allocated 755.83 crore Indian rupees annually for the initiative. Authorities say 128,000 rings have been prepared for the initial phase, with about 441,000 newborns expected to benefit each year.
The government says the scheme aims to encourage safe deliveries at public health facilities and strengthen public confidence in government healthcare. However, opposition leaders have questioned the initiative, arguing that more attention should be given to improving nutrition, medical services, staffing and infrastructure at government hospitals.
