Sep 28, Kathmandu - Former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana has asked police to make necessary arrangements to protect him and his family. A petition was submitted on his behalf by his son, Sachindra Shumsher Rana, to the Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari on Sunday.

The petition says recent developments in the country, along with security-related discussions on social media and in the news, have raised serious concerns about the family’s safety. Rana also cited his past roles in state institutions and judicial decisions made while heading the judiciary as reasons for feeling increasingly vulnerable.

Rana said information he recently received at a police office suggested that additional protection was needed. He urged the state to ensure the security of his residence, family and personal safety, noting that security agencies already have his details.

Kathmandu Valley Police Office Chief, AIG Sushil Singh Rathore, confirmed that the petition had been filed. Police detained Rana on Saturday night, and he was released on Sunday afternoon. His detention has prompted public debate.
