Sep 04, Kathmandu - New York City’s public schools have announced a temporary ban on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools for children up to 14 years old. Beginning with the upcoming academic session, primary and middle school students will be prohibited from using AI applications, affecting nearly 600,000 students, according to BBC reports.

Mayor Eric Adams emphasized that the decision aims to foster better learning and development by prioritizing human relationships and teacher-student interactions. He highlighted the importance of encouraging students to collaborate with peers, build relationships with teachers, and solve complex problems independently.

Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, is a technology capable of creating various content based on user prompts. The mayor also announced new guidelines to limit students’ screen time, recommending a maximum of 30 minutes daily for students in grades 3-5 and 45 minutes for those in grades 6-8.

Additionally, the use of ‘Companion Chatbots’ has been banned in schools. Middle school students will receive AI-related education twice a year, and the city will review its AI education programs throughout the year.

Mayor Adams clarified that this policy is temporary. The effectiveness of the measures will be monitored over the next year, with adjustments made as needed to ensure optimal educational development.
