Nepal Faces Massive Reconstruction Costs Following Catastrophic Floods

Aug 29, Kathmandu - Nepal is projected to need between $4 billion and $5 billion for compensation and rebuilding efforts after the destructive floods caused by the Bhotekoshi River, according to initial estimates. Finance Minister Swarnim Waglé stated that the total reconstruction cost could exceed seven trillion Nepalese Rupees, which is about 10% of the country's total GDP, currently around 7 trillion Nepalese Rupees.

The minister highlighted that detailed damage assessments are still underway. "The preliminary estimate ranges between $4 billion and $5 billion. This is only an initial figure," Waglé told Reuters. "Compared to the 2015 earthquake, which required around $9 billion for recovery, this disaster is expected to need significantly less funding. The ongoing evaluations are still in progress."

The floods have caused widespread devastation, destroying settlements in districts like Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading, as well as damaging bridges and roads. Major hydroelectric projects have also suffered substantial damage, posing a severe threat to Nepal’s energy sector.

Historically, Nepal's most devastating disaster was the 2015 earthquake, which resulted in a recovery cost of approximately $9 billion. The earthquake claimed nearly 9,000 lives and destroyed over half a million homes, inflicting damage equivalent to about one-third of Nepal’s total economy. The current flood damages are yet to be fully quantified, and the government has not disclosed detailed figures on the anticipated costs.

The recent floods have dealt a significant blow to Nepal's economy, which heavily relies on remittances, tourism, and hydropower. Particularly, hydroelectric projects—contributing more than 12% to national production—have suffered severe damage, further impacting the country’s economic stability.
