Aug 23, Kathmandu - Australia has avenged their previous defeat in Darwin by securing a comprehensive victory over Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs in the second Test, played on Australian soil. The match, one of the shortest in Test cricket history, lasted only two days, marking it as the second shortest Test ever held in Australia.
Mitchell Starc was the standout performer, claiming 10 wickets throughout the match, helping Australia level the series at 1-1. Bangladesh was bowled out for 64 runs in their first innings and 95 in the second, becoming the first team in Test history to be dismissed for under 100 runs in both innings of a match. Australia posted a total of 210 runs in their first innings, their fourth-lowest score in an innings to secure a victory.
On the second day, Australia extended their lead by adding 45 more runs, reaching a 146-run lead. From the outset of Bangladesh’s second innings, Mitchell Starc dominated with aggressive bowling, dismissing Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque in consecutive balls. Pat Cummins also contributed by dismissing Tanjid Hasan, putting Bangladesh under increased pressure.
Najmul Hossain Shanto fought to resist with 31 runs, but Nathan Lyon dismissed him. Liton Das, Bangladesh’s top batter, was dismissed for zero for the third consecutive time in the series, failing to score a single run throughout the series.
Nathan Lyon took the final wickets, ending the match. During this game, Steve Smith caught his 219th catch, equaling the record for most catches in Test cricket held by Joe Root.
Australia’s Cameron Green contributed a vital 67 runs, while Nathan Lyon remained unbeaten with 32. Despite Shoriful Islam’s impressive effort of taking 7 wickets for Bangladesh, it was not enough to save the team from defeat.
