Ukrainian President Zelensky Warns Against Holding Elections During War, Calls for Unity

Aug 23, Kathmandu - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed strong reservations about holding national elections amid ongoing Russian aggression, citing the significant risks involved. The President responded to former Defense Minister Mikhaylo Fedorov’s recent call for elections, emphasizing the dangers of conducting votes during wartime.

“Holding elections during such a war is inherently risky. Under current circumstances, it would be akin to a tsunami that could divide Ukraine,” Zelensky stated.

Ukraine, which has been engaged in a fierce conflict against Russian forces, has postponed elections following the implementation of martial law. Public support for delaying elections appears to be widespread at present.

“If we aim to dismantle the country, then perhaps we can consider elections during wartime,” the 48-year-old leader remarked. He made these comments during a briefing with media outlets, including AFP, marking his first such engagement after months of political controversies.

The Ukrainian leader’s decision to remove former Defense Minister Fedorov from his position has intensified political tensions within the country. Fedorov had recently called for elections to be held, though he did not present a concrete plan to do so.

Experts warn that holding elections amidst conflict raises complex questions about how soldiers, millions of Ukrainians abroad, and residents of territories under Russian control will be able to vote. There is also concern over the potential spread of misinformation originating from Russia.

According to a survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, only 15 percent of Ukrainians support holding elections before the war is over.

During the briefing, Zelensky criticized Fedorov, suggesting that he “is heading in the wrong direction or is being pushed that way.” The President also emphasized the importance of respecting the right to protest but urged citizens not to disrespect the military. He warned that divisions within society and the military could further jeopardize the nation’s stability.
