Nepalese Authorities Crack Down on Hostels in Kathmandu: One Month to Comply with New Standards

Aug 23, Kathmandu - The District Administration Office of Kathmandu has issued a stern warning to privately operated hostels to fully comply with government-mandated standards within one month. The move comes amid mounting complaints and reports of violations in hostel operations across the district.

In a recent notice, the office highlighted that regular and emergency inspections are being intensified due to various grievances related to hostel management. Several hostels found violating regulations have faced fines of up to three lakh rupees and, in some cases, suspension of operations.

The administration revealed troubling issues including inhumane treatment of students, excessive fee collection beyond prescribed limits, poor infrastructure, inadequate sanitation, substandard food and water quality, and insufficient security measures. Reports also indicate misuse of narcotics and alcohol within hostels, lack of proper study and recreation facilities, and, alarmingly, incidents of student suicides within hostel premises.

All private hostel operators have been instructed to implement necessary improvements within a month and strictly adhere to the prescribed standards. The district office emphasized the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment for students, strengthening internal security, and ensuring compliance with government and local authority guidelines.

Additional directives include banning the use and sale of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and tobacco products within hostels. Hostel owners are also required to register and renew their operations with relevant authorities, improve physical infrastructure, operate proper study rooms and libraries, and maintain cleanliness and food safety standards.

Furthermore, the administration urged hostel operators to ensure reliable access to clean drinking water, electricity, internet, and other essential services to guarantee a healthy and conducive living environment for students.
