Aug 16, Kathmandu - Newly elected Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called on the United States to temporarily remove additional tariffs on goods imported from Colombia, emphasizing the need for economic support in the wake of a devastating earthquake. In a 10-minute phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, Petro requested the suspension of tariffs imposed on Colombian exports amid the ongoing reconstruction efforts.

The powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Colombia on Monday has claimed at least 294 lives and damaged tens of thousands of buildings across the country. The government estimates that approximately $6.4 billion will be needed for reconstruction.

In late July, the U.S. increased tariffs on most Colombian goods from 10% to 12.5%, although exemptions were made for items like coffee and oil. As Colombia’s largest export market, the tariffs pose a significant burden on the country's businesses during their recovery phase. President Petro expressed concern that the additional tariffs could further strain the nation's economic stability and called for their temporary removal to facilitate aid and rebuilding.

Petro described the dialogue with President Trump as "friendly and cordial" and highlighted the importance of U.S. support during this critical period. The Colombian leader, who previously won the presidency with U.S. backing, has been actively engaging in strengthening military cooperation with the United States and Israel, including plans to enhance security partnerships.

As Colombia faces the immense challenge of rebuilding after one of the strongest earthquakes in recent history, Petro’s appeal underscores the urgent need for international assistance to restore the nation’s infrastructure and support its citizens.
