Aug 06, Kathmandu - Former Nepali Congress Chairman and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is scheduled to return to Nepal on Shrawan 26, according to party leader Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat. Deuba will arrive in Kathmandu at around 9:45 PM via flight, Mahat confirmed.

Deuba initially announced his intention to return to Nepal on Shrawan 5, paying homage to BP Koirala and emphasizing his commitment to democracy, the constitution, and national interests. He called on all political parties, civil society, youth, and citizens to stand firmly in support of democracy, nationalism, socialism, and constitutionalism.

This development comes shortly after the Supreme Court decided to review a case related to Gagan Thapa’s recognition as the Congress President. Meanwhile, Deuba’s return is notable as other factions within the party are planning a national convention.

Deuba, who had traveled to Singapore for medical treatment on Chaitra 7, 2082, and subsequently to Hong Kong, was detained there amid investigations into corruption and money laundering. The government under Balendra Shah attempted to arrest Deuba and his wife Arzu Rana Deuba in Baisakh, but the Supreme Court stayed the arrest following petitions filed by the couple. Interpol had also issued a red notice, but efforts to arrest Deuba remained unsuccessful due to prior refusals by Interpol.

Despite these hurdles, the government has expressed a firm policy to arrest Deuba if he returns to Nepal. Deuba’s departure from Singapore was for medical reasons, and he has been residing in Hong Kong with his wife since then. His wife, Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, has not made public statements about her return plans.

Deuba previously traveled abroad for treatment on Falgun 13, 2082, and since then has been in Hong Kong, where he continues to recover and receive medical care.
