Aug 03, Kathmandu - Senior leader Dr. Dhawalshamsher Rana, who is preparing to register a new party after splitting from Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), has expressed strong objection to the arrest of Durga Prasai, a prominent nationalist figure. In a statement issued today, Rana demanded the immediate release of Prasai, who was detained last night from his residence.

The statement criticized the government's action, stating, “In this context, it is reprehensible that the government arrested Durga Prasai last night from his home, solely for exercising his fundamental right to freedom of expression and opinion, which are protected under human rights and the constitution.”

Rana emphasized that the right to criticism, differing opinions, and freedom of expression are foundational pillars of democracy. 

The release further added, “The government’s accountability to its citizens, democratic balance, and societal progress depend on respecting these freedoms. If criticism of the government is not tolerated, a democratic system cannot survive.”
