Tragedy Strikes as Social Media Harassment Pushes Young Girl to Suicide in Madhesh

Jul 03, Kathmandu - In recent times, posts that undermine personal privacy and social values on social media platforms have tragically pushed some women into life-threatening situations. The issue is particularly severe among women in Madhesh.

A heartbreaking incident unfolded on June 30 in Bhaloh, Kolaiya Sub-Metropolitan City-21, Bara district. A 13-year-old girl named Saria Khatun took her own life after social media posts—viral videos humiliating her publicly—exposed her to intense social shame and mental trauma.

The incident occurred after local youths posted a video online showing Saria sitting with a young man in a field near her village, accusing her of inappropriate behavior. The video quickly went viral, leading to widespread ridicule and harassment.

According to her family, overwhelmed by humiliation and psychological pressure, Saria was unable to cope and ended her life. Police reports indicate that she was found hanging in her home.

Following the tragedy, her family filed a complaint with the local police station in Simara. Based on their complaint, police have registered a case against seven youths for inciting suicide, with one person already in custody and others being sought.

Police and local residents revealed that on June 29, Saria was sitting with a young man in a nearby field when a group of youths arrived and began verbally abusing her, calling her derogatory names. Family members allege that the youths also physically assaulted her and recorded the assault on mobile phones. The videos were subsequently posted online, spreading rapidly through villages and communities.

The viral videos not only exposed her to social shame but also intensified her suffering. The images and footage of her being verbally abused and assaulted created a sense of public humiliation, further traumatizing Saria.

The family claims that after being subjected to verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence, Saria could no longer bear the ordeal and chose to end her life. Her body was found hanging the following day in her home.

The family has demanded strict action against those involved, and police have launched an investigation. Officer Balram Shrestha from Bara District Police confirmed that one suspect has been detained, and efforts are underway to apprehend others.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the motive behind the suicide is still unclear, as no suicide note or concrete evidence has been found. Authorities are examining social media videos, testimonies, and the timeline of events to determine the full circumstances.

The police reiterated that they are investigating from all angles and that charges of inciting suicide have been filed against seven individuals based on evidence, including the viral videos. One suspect is in custody, and efforts to arrest others are ongoing.

The incident highlights the devastating impact of social media harassment and the importance of safeguarding personal dignity and mental health, especially among young girls.
