Powerful Earthquake hits Philippines, Tsunami Warning Issued for Japan

Jun 08, Kathmandu - A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Mindanao region of the Philippines on Monday morning.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for several coastal areas in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the city of Burias in the Philippines. The earthquake struck at 7:37 a.m. local time on Monday.

The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) said the earthquake struck at a shallow depth, which caused strong tremors and increased the risk of a tsunami.

The US Tsunami Warning System has warned of dangerous waves in the region.

Indonesia's Geophysical Agency has also issued a warning for the northeastern coast.
