Intensifying Israeli Attacks in Southern Lebanon Disrupt Emergency Relief Efforts

May 30, Kathmandu - The United Nations reports that escalating Israeli military strikes in southern Lebanon have severely hampered emergency rescue operations and the distribution of vital relief supplies.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the attacks on Thursday in the Nabatyeh region inflicted damage to a major road in the Marjayoun district—an essential route for evacuating the wounded, deploying relief workers, and providing civilians with critical goods and services.

Local sources indicate that at least eight people were killed in separate airstrikes in the Marakah municipality of southern Lebanon. Additionally, three lives were lost in the Al-Bass Palestinian refugee camp, with approximately 37 others injured.

Repeated displacement orders have forced many families to leave their homes, with some returning only to be displaced again as security conditions fluctuate. Shelters in Tire city are reported to be full, prompting many displaced families to move northward.

Despite these challenging circumstances, the UN has assured continued delivery of lifesaving aid through partner organizations across the country. Since March 2, the World Food Programme and its partners have distributed over 1.1 million hot and cold meals to conflict-affected communities.

Furthermore, UN agencies and partners have provided displaced families with more than 170,000 blankets and 130,000 mattresses.

UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, Imran Riza, expressed deep concern over the rising violence and displacement, highlighting the impact on communities. He also revealed that civilians fleeing from displacement zones have become victims of airstrikes.

According to Lebanese government data, since March 2, at least 3,355 people have been killed, with 10,095 injured in the ongoing conflict.
