May 25, Kathmandu - The soaring temperatures have prompted local municipalities in Kanchanpur to close schools to protect students' health.
The Shuklaphanta Municipality announced that all schools within its jurisdiction will remain closed on Jestha 12 and 13 due to the intense heatwave. The municipality cited concerns over the adverse effects of extreme heat on students' health and the difficulties in operating schools under such conditions.
Similarly, Krishnapur Municipality has declared a three-day holiday for all community and institutional schools starting today, as per the municipal information officer, Prem Bogati.
Bhim Datt Municipality has also announced a three-day closure of schools from today, citing summer holidays and the ongoing heatwave as reasons for the break.
In total, Kanchanpur, which comprises nine local levels, has 349 institutional and 260 community schools. The recent heatwave has significantly impacted daily life in the district.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology issued a special bulletin warning of extreme heat and heatwaves, urging the public to take necessary precautions. The bulletin highlighted that maximum temperatures in some parts of Lumbini and Sudur Paschim provinces, including the hilly and Terai regions, could reach 38°C or higher, with some areas experiencing temperatures of 40°C or more, indicating an imminent heatwave.
Citizens are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and follow safety guidelines during this period of extreme heat.
