Supreme Court Delays Hearing on 'Lalibazar' Film Protest Petition Amid Dispute Over Screening Ban

May 14, Kathmandu - The petition demanding a halt to the screening of the Nepali film 'Lalibazar' was scheduled for hearing in the Supreme Court on Thursday (Baisakh 31), but the case was postponed due to the unavailability of the judges’ bench.

A joint bench of Justices Tek Prasad Dhungana and Shanti Singh Thapa had set a date for the hearing. However, when the judges were unavailable, a new date for the hearing was ordered.

The Supreme Court had previously directed the Film Development Board, the respondent in the case, to be notified; however, the board was not informed in time, prompting the Court to issue a re-appointment of the hearing date on Wednesday (Baisakh 30).

Dr. Roshni Nepali, the petitioner, filed the complaint alleging that certain words used in the film insulted women. After the Patan High Court lifted a temporary injunction that had temporarily halted the film's screening on Baisakh 23, Dr. Nepali approached the Supreme Court with her petition.

She criticized the Court’s decision to cancel the interim order on Baisakh 15, calling it "irresponsible." Dr. Nepali claimed that the film was created in a manner that hurt the sentiments of the Dalit community.

Following the Court’s directive to notify the Film Development Board, the petitioner, visibly upset, displayed inappropriate behavior in the bench, leading to her being taken into police custody on Wednesday.
