Suvendu Adhikari Sworn in as West Bengal's New Chief Minister, Marking BJP’s Historic Entry

May 09, Kathmandu - West Bengal has a new leadership as Suvendu Adhikari took the oath of office as the state's Chief Minister today. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Brigade Parade Ground, where the Governor administered the oath of office and secrecy to Adhikari in the presence of prominent dignitaries.

This marks the beginning of a new era in West Bengal politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assuming power. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers, and chief ministers from other states. Alongside Adhikari, five other ministers also took their oaths.

Adhikari’s appointment was made possible after the legislature party unanimously elected him as their leader during a meeting held on Friday. Central Home Minister and BJP observer Amit Shah participated in the meeting and officially announced Adhikari’s name after receiving support from all members present.

Shah highlighted that after the election process, various proposals and support had been gathered, and since all members supported a single name, Suvendu Adhikari was declared the leader of the West Bengal legislative assembly party.

Discussions on the allocation of ministries, government priorities, and administrative restructuring have already begun within the new cabinet. Amit Shah has been appointed as the central observer for West Bengal, with Mohan Charan Majhi serving as co-observer.

This victory follows BJP’s historic success in the recently concluded assembly elections, where the party won 206 out of 294 seats—its first-ever government formation in West Bengal. The ruling Trinamool Congress was limited to 80 seats.
