Apr 27, Kathmandu - Members of National Assembly have condemned the government’s recent eviction of squatters from informal settlements, criticizing the lack of prior preparations and alternative arrangements. During a parliamentary committee meeting at Singha Durbar on Monday, MPs described the move as inhumane and fear-inducing.
NCP MP Ghanashyam Rijal accused the government of acting on the Prime Minister’s directives to suddenly clear the settlements. He lamented that security personnel were deployed without giving at least a week's notice, leading to brutal treatment of displaced residents. “Children have been crying all night, witnessing such heartbreaking scenes. No matter how much criticism it attracts, this is unacceptable,” Rijal stated. He urged the committee to conduct a thorough on-site investigation of the affected areas.
Likewise, Mahantha Thakur, President of the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP), criticized recent government decisions for escalating negative impacts across the country. He pointed out that the rising dissatisfaction among the public contradicts the Prime Minister’s claims that regional issues, such as those in Madhesh, can be resolved locally. Thakur also expressed discontent over the removal of budget allocations for constituency development, demanding that this decision be rectified.
Most MPs present strongly criticized the procedures used to evict the squatters. They emphasized that forcibly displacing families and children without providing alternatives constitutes a violation of basic human rights. The committee called for close scrutiny of these incidents and urged authorities to cease actions that incite fear among citizens.
