Apr 19, Kathmandu - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning that the partial relaxation of sanctions on Russian oil could significantly boost Russia’s financial resources for its ongoing war efforts. He cautioned that this decision might intensify the attacks on Ukraine.
Responding via social media, Zelensky highlighted that every dollar spent on purchasing Russian oil is effectively fueling the conflict. He emphasized that this financial flow directly supports the destructive invasion in Ukraine. While he did not explicitly name the country, it is understood that his remarks allude to the recent temporary exemption granted by the U.S. administration regarding Russian oil export restrictions.
Earlier this week, the U.S. government extended a one-month exemption allowing the sale of Russian oil and petroleum products via sea routes. This move was primarily aimed at controlling soaring energy prices caused by conflicts in the Middle East. However, just days after the U.S. Treasury signaled that such exemptions would not be renewed, the decision appeared to be reversed.
According to Zelensky, over 110 Russian tankers are currently navigating international waters, carrying more than 12 million tons of crude oil in violation of sanctions. He warned that the easing of restrictions could facilitate the easy sale of these sources, potentially generating around $10 billion—funds that could be directly used to fund further attacks against Ukraine.
He also revealed that in just the past week, Russia has launched over 2,360 attack drones, more than 1,320 guided bombs, and nearly 60 missiles targeting Ukrainian cities. This indicates that the intensity of the war remains unabated.
In a recent attack in the northern city of Chernihiv, a 16-year-old teenager was killed, and four others were injured, according to local authorities. The incident has heightened fears and insecurity among civilians.
Zelensky urged the international community to take strict measures to stop Russian oil shipments and prevent tankers from reaching ports. He emphasized that reducing Russian oil exports is crucial to weakening the aggressors’ capacity, and Ukraine will continue its long-range restrictive measures to counter the threat.
