Government's 'national commitment': Nepal will be transformed from a 'buffer state' to a 'vibrant bridge'

Apr 14, Kathmandu - The current government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah (Balen) has announced its commitment to pursuing a "balanced and dynamic diplomacy" as a cornerstone of its foreign policy. This pledge is outlined in the draft of the country's "National Commitment," which has been made public.

The draft states, "Nepal will adopt a balanced and dynamic diplomatic approach, prioritizing sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests while adapting to the changing global geopolitical landscape and the rise of neighboring powers, turning these challenges into opportunities for development."

The government prepared this draft based on the election manifestos of six major political parties and has sought feedback from political stakeholders by Chaitra 13. Following the formation of the new government, a list of 100 governance reforms was also unveiled, emphasizing the integration of all political parties' election promises into a shared national commitment.

The document highlights plans to establish a scientific "Performance Audit" system to evaluate the effectiveness of Nepal's diplomatic activities. It also envisions transforming Nepal from a "buffer state" to a "vibrant bridge," promoting trilateral economic partnerships and connectivity to safeguard national interests and position Nepal as an independent, neutral, and non-aligned nation committed to global peace.

Furthermore, the draft underscores a policy of equality and proximity with all nations, avoiding military alliances, arms races, and conflicts that hinder peace. The overarching philosophy centers on "Nepal First" in all diplomatic endeavors.

To bolster economic diplomacy, initiatives like the "Sagarmatha Dialogue" will continue, with Nepal raising its voice on issues such as climate change, Himalayan conservation, border issues, and international platforms. The government also aims to protect the rights, security, and social welfare of Nepali migrant workers through international cooperation.

This comprehensive approach aims to position Nepal as a resilient and respected actor on the global stage, emphasizing sovereignty, sustainable development, and peaceful diplomacy.
