Apr 05, Kathmandu - In a major crackdown on illegal online betting activities, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has shut down over 7,000 betting-related applications and websites. The action was taken as part of the government's broader reform initiatives to curb illegal gambling online.
According to NTA Deputy Director Surya Prasad Lamichhane, the authority identified and directed internet service providers (ISPs) to deactivate websites and apps involved in illegal betting. These measures follow the government's decision to enhance regulatory oversight and ensure the enforcement of existing laws.
“More than 7,000 URLs and applications related to illegal betting have been shut down so far. Over the past week alone, we received over 50 complaints via phone, email, and messages, all of which have been addressed through prompt action,” Lamichhane stated.
This crackdown aligns with the cabinet-approved reform agenda, specifically item number 42 of the 100-item action plan, which mandates the immediate closure of betting websites and apps within 24 hours. In coordination with internet providers, the authority swiftly identified and shut down all active betting platforms.
Legal provisions strictly prohibit betting under the Muluki Criminal Code, 2074, specifically Section 125(4), which states that anyone caught betting or facilitating betting faces confiscation of the wagered amount, up to one year of imprisonment, and fines up to NPR 10,000. Additionally, the Betting (Regulation) Act, 2066, bans advertising that promotes gambling, including purchasing or selling betting slips without authorization, under penalty of similar sanctions.
The government urges citizens not to use or operate betting apps or websites and has warned of strict action against violations. It also calls on the public to report any suspicious betting platforms to relevant authorities to aid ongoing enforcement efforts.
