Police Issue High Alert in Madhesh Amid Political Turmoil and Recent Arrests of Ex-Premier and Ex-Home Minister

Mar 28, Kathmandu - In response to escalating political activities across the country, the Nepal Police Headquarters has issued a directive for heightened vigilance in the Madhesh. Following the arrest of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, the Madhesh Police Department has been placed on high alert.

Since Saturday morning, the Madhesh Provincial Police Office has been operating under a high alert status, according to Police Chief Govind Thapaliya. The alert was formally announced through circulars issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police Headquarters, emphasizing the importance of increased security measures.

Deputy Inspector General Thapaliya explained that, considering recent developments and security challenges, all police units in Madhesh have been instructed to stay alert. "Starting today, we have begun detailed intelligence gathering on political activities across the region. Police commanders from all eight districts are coordinating and deploying additional personnel to ensure strict surveillance," he stated.

Additionally, all police personnel, including district police chiefs, have had their leave postponed effective immediately to ensure continuous security coverage.

The heightened alert follows the recommendation of the Investigation Commission formed to probe the GEFONT agitation nearly seven months ago (Bhadra). As per the commission’s findings, former Prime Minister Oli and then-Home Minister Lekhak were arrested.

Given the current political developments, security concerns in Madhesh are expected to intensify. Authorities anticipate protests and demonstrations in opposition to the arrests, prompting the police to remain on high alert.

Madhesh Province comprises eight districts: Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Siraha, and Saptari. The Madhesh Police Department reports that over ten police personnel are deployed across these districts to maintain order.
