South Africa Women Level Series After Thrilling 18-Run Victory Over New Zealand in T20I Clash

Mar 17, Kathmandu - South Africa's women's cricket team staged a remarkable comeback by defeating New Zealand by 18 runs in the second T20 International, leveling the series at 1-1.

Chasing a target of 178 runs set by South Africa, New Zealand fell short despite a strong start. Opener Amelia Kerr and Sophie Divine built a solid partnership during the power play, reaching 70/2, but their momentum was halted by disciplined bowling and key wickets.

South Africa’s innings was powered by an aggressive Tazmin Brits, who scored 53 runs, and captain Laura Wolvaardt, unbeaten on 43. The team was cruising at 110/1 before losing wickets in quick succession, slipping to 120/4.

The game-changing moment arrived in the final overs, with Kaya Renecke smashing three consecutive sixes in the last over to propel South Africa to a competitive total of 177/5 in 20 overs. Her explosive hitting proved decisive in setting a challenging target for New Zealand.

In reply, New Zealand’s top order showed promise but struggled to maintain their momentum. Amelia Kerr was dismissed by Nonkululeko Mlaba, and Sophie Divine followed shortly after, leaving the hosts in trouble. Despite a fighting effort from Izzie Sharp, who hit some stylish boundaries, the team couldn't sustain the pressure.

South Africa’s bowlers, Ayabonga Khaka (4 wickets) and Mlaba (3 wickets), kept the pressure on, regularly claiming wickets and restricting New Zealand to 159/9 in 19.1 overs.

The third and final match of the series is scheduled for this Friday, promising more thrilling cricket action.
