Meta's X Tests New Subtle Ad Format Beneath Posts

Mar 09, Kathmandu - Meta’s social media platform X is experimenting with a new advertising format that appears below posts, resembling non-intrusive recommendations. Initial tests in Europe have shown promising results, with users noticing suggested links related to products or services beneath certain posts.

In a recent test, a user in Portugal shared that a recommended link titled "Get Starlink" appeared beneath a post praising SpaceX’s satellite internet service. Clicking the link redirected users to the official Starlink website. This recommendation was displayed directly below the post, blending seamlessly with the content.

Nikita Bier, Product Lead at X, confirmed the ongoing testing and described it as an effort to develop "ad-like yet unobtrusive advertising experiences." Currently, not all users see these recommendations, but the designated ad space is visible in certain markets.

Some users expressed surprise at the new feature, with one asking, "Did you add this Starlink button?" The platform’s team clarified that they are intentionally avoiding inserting affiliate links in this space, as it could lead to false recommendations and compromise trustworthiness.

X is still refining this feature, aiming to balance monetization with user experience by providing subtle, relevant suggestions without overwhelming users.
