Mar 09, Kathmandu - The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a petition today challenging the Office of the Attorney General’s decision to amend charges of asset laundering and organized crime against Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane.
A joint bench comprising Justices Nahakul Subedi and Abdul Aziz Musalman will hear the case. Advocate Dinesh Tripathi, Yuvraj Safal, and others have filed the petition demanding the nullification of the Attorney General’s Office decision.
The petitioners have named the Office of the Attorney General, various government legal offices, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Council of Ministers as respondents. They argue that the decision to amend charges against Lamichhane—related to cooperative fraud, organized crime, and asset laundering—weakens the legal case and hinders due process. They have also sought an interim order to prevent the implementation of the decision until the final verdict is issued, emphasizing that no legal procedures should be carried out based on the decision.
The Attorney General’s Office had previously decided on Paush 30 to amend charges against Lamichhane related to money laundering and organized crime. Attorney General Sabita Bhandari stated that the amendment was aimed at enabling Lamichhane to contest upcoming elections and exercise political rights if elected.
Lamichhane had requested the Attorney General’s Office to withdraw the charges against him, citing that the allegations related to money laundering and organized crime were unfounded. Following this, Attorney General Bhandari withdrew the decision to amend the charges. The petition challenging this decision has now been filed in the Supreme Court.
