Feb 28, Kathmandu - Following recent military actions by Israel and the United States against Iran, two major Indian private airlines—IndiGo and Air India—have temporarily suspended all flights to destinations across the Middle East.
Air India issued a statement via X (formerly Twitter), citing increasing hostilities in certain parts of the Middle East as the reason for the suspension. “All flights to Middle Eastern destinations have been postponed in view of the escalating conflict in some parts of the region,” the airline said.
Similarly, IndiGo announced it was suspending operations temporarily to ensure the safety of passengers and crew amid the tense situation.
Millions of Indian expatriates reside in the Gulf countries and neighboring nations, making this region vital for India's economic and strategic interests. The move comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned home from a historic visit to Israel, during which both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade and defense relations.
The recent escalation in the region follows an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023—an event that prompted widespread international concern. The Indian government has maintained a balanced stance, emphasizing the importance of stability in the region.
Prime Minister Modi, addressing Israeli lawmakers, assured that India stands firmly with Israel following the deadly Hamas attack, reaffirming the country's support amid rising tensions in the region.
