Feb 23, Kathmandu - Nepali women’s national football team captain Sabitra Bhandari ‘Samba’ is preparing for a major knee surgery after suffering a severe injury, and she is appealing for financial assistance to cover the mounting treatment costs.
Bhandari has been out of action for the past seven weeks due to a serious knee injury involving both her ACL graft and MCL, requiring a complex re-operation. While her initial treatment was facilitated through the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), she claims that the promised support has not been fully realized this time.
She expressed frustration, stating that although ANFA president had assured up to NPR 500,000 in cash support, administrative hurdles have prevented the aid from materializing. Bhandari revealed that her previous treatment was carried out at a hospital in Qatar, and she wishes to continue her recovery there, given the severity of her injury.
The estimated cost for the upcoming surgery and a 7-8 month rehabilitation is approximately USD 80,000, which exceeds her current insurance coverage. Her club is ready to provide funds through insurance, but the remaining expenses remain a challenge.
Currently playing club football in New Zealand and Australia, Bhandari reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to representing Nepal on the field and expressed her determination to return in the national jersey. She called on supporters both within Nepal and abroad to contribute through bank transfers, QR codes, or online platforms to support her treatment.
