Deadly Attack in Nigeria's Zamfara Leaves Over 50 Dead, Women and Children Abducted

Feb 21, Kathmandu - Gunmen launched a night-long attack on a village in Nigeria's northwestern Zamfara state, killing at least 50 people and abducting several women and children, reports Al Jazeera.

The assault took place in the Tungana Dutsi village of Bukkuyum district, where armed assailants arrived on motorcycles, setting buildings ablaze and causing widespread chaos. The violence reportedly continued until Friday morning.

A local lawmaker, Hamis A. Faru, confirmed the attack, stating, "They are moving from one village to another and have already taken at least 50 lives."

Abdullahi Sani, 41, recounted that villagers noticed over 150 armed individuals on motorcycles the day before, alerting security forces. However, no action was taken. Sani expressed the community's despair, saying, "No one could sleep last night. We are all in pain." He also reported the loss of three family members during the assault.

This attack underscores the ongoing threat posed by armed criminal gangs and insurgent groups in Nigeria's northwestern regions. Just last week, at least 46 people were killed in Borgu district of neighboring Niger state, highlighting the widespread violence in the area.
