PM Karki Pushes for Fair and Peaceful Elections: Ensures Robust Security Measures in Lumbini Province

Feb 21, Kathmandu - Prime Minister Sushila Karki has directed officials to work with full preparation to ensure that the upcoming House of Representatives elections are conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner. During a security meeting held today at the Lumbini Provincial Headquarters in Butwal, she emphasized that safeguarding the integrity of the election is a collective responsibility requiring active participation from all stakeholders.

At the meeting, which focused on electoral preparations and security arrangements across the province, Prime Minister Karki stressed the importance of identifying and addressing challenges at the district level. Chief Secretary of the Province, Krishna Prasad Kapri, informed that the meeting reviewed overall election readiness and security strategies devised in response to district-specific challenges.

Kapri explained that security committees in each district had been tasked with categorizing polling stations based on their sensitivity—ranging from highly sensitive to normal—and devising integrated security plans involving the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and other relevant agencies. The aim is to implement coordinated strategies aligned with the election command centers established across the province.

The meeting also discussed ongoing dialogue with district security committees to ensure smooth coordination and effective implementation of security measures. Kapri highlighted that preparations are underway in all 12 districts, with particular focus on sensitive areas, and that the government has identified potential challenges such as open borders in Tarai districts, remote communication in Rukum East, and demographic diversity-related issues.

Senior officials, including Lieutenant General Himmat Bahadur Bista of the Nepal Army, Provincial Chiefs of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force, and district magistrates, provided updates on their respective areas. The gathering reaffirmed the commitment to conducting the elections peacefully and transparently, with all agencies working collaboratively under the Prime Minister’s guidance.

Prime Minister Karki expressed confidence that with enhanced coordination and strategic planning, the elections will be conducted smoothly and fairly. She urged all security agencies and local authorities to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing any emerging challenges, especially in border areas and sensitive districts.

As part of the integrated security plan, information collected from various agencies will inform targeted strategies to ensure the safety of voters and election officials. The government has also sought cooperation from local bodies to facilitate the election process, emphasizing that a peaceful and credible election is vital for democracy in the region.
