Feb 20, Kathmandu - Sweden has announced its military aid package for Ukraine, worth around $1.4 billion.
The bulk of the funding will be for air defence and ammunition, the statement said.
Sweden said modular capabilities will help protect against air threats with gun and missile systems, interceptors, sensors, electronic warfare components and command-and-control systems. The package includes around $330 million for ammunition, training and related support, including the purchase of a large quantity of shells and air defence rounds.
The new initiative includes financial contributions and financing for projects including civil defence, expanded cooperation with Ukraine on long-range drones and unmanned aerial vehicles. Sweden said it would donate some equipment from its armed forces, including recoilless rifles with accessories and ammunition, while funding will be provided for the purchase and transport of replacements.
Sweden has provided a military support package to Ukraine, Swedish Defense Minister Pál Jónsson said on social media. He said the focus is on newly developed air defense systems, long-range capabilities and ammunition to meet Ukraine's most urgent needs. With the latest package, Sweden's military assistance to Ukraine has reached about $11.3 billion since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Moscow has repeatedly said that Western arms supplies to Ukraine are hindering efforts to resolve the conflict, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has warned that any cargo containing weapons destined for Ukraine will be targeted by Russian forces.
