T20 World Cup: Four undefeated teams in same group in Super Eight

Feb 20, Kathmandu - The excitement of the T20 World Cup 2026 is at its peak. The group stage is almost over and the tournament has now entered the Super 8 stage.

Eight teams have secured their place in the next stage, which has been divided into two groups.

Group 1 of the Super 8 consists of India, South Africa, West Indies, and Zimbabwe. All four teams entered the Super 8 without losing a single match in the group stage and were ranked at the top of their respective groups.

Similarly, Group 2 consists of England, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. These teams, on the other hand, lost at least one match in the group stage and made it to the Super-8 as runners-up.

Group 1: All top-ranked and undefeated

The Super 8 teams have been divided according to the International Cricket Council's predetermined classification system. All four teams in Group 1 had performed excellently and secured the top spot by remaining undefeated.

Group Stage Performance –

India (Group A) – 4 matches, 4 wins, 8 points

Zimbabwe (Group B) – 4 matches, 3 wins, 1 draw, 7 points

West Indies (Group C) – 4 matches, 4 wins, 8 points

South Africa (Group D) – 4 matches, 4 wins, 8 points

As all four teams reached the Super 8s unbeaten, Group 1 has been referred to as the ‘top-placed team group’.

Group 2: Every team suffered at least one defeat

All the teams in Group 2 lost one match each in the group stage. However, with three wins each, they secured a place in the next stage as runners-up.

Group Stage Performance:

Pakistan (Group A) – 4 matches, 3 wins, 1 loss, 6 points

Sri Lanka (Group B) – 4 matches, 3 wins, 1 loss, 6 points

England (Group C) – 4 matches, 3 wins, 1 loss, 6 points

New Zealand (Group D) – 4 matches, 3 wins, 1 loss, 6 points

Due to the pre-determined classification, all the undefeated teams have been placed in the same place in Group 1 of the Super 8s, making this group very competitive. In Group 2, all four teams are considered strong based on experience and ability.

Now it remains to be seen – will the undefeated teams in Group 1 be able to maintain their momentum, or will the teams in Group 2 create a new equation and secure a place in the previous round?
