Bangladesh's Future Prime Minister Tarique Rahman Takes Oath Amid Political Transition

Feb 17, Kathmandu - Tarique Rahman, the anticipated future Prime Minister of Bangladesh, along with newly elected Members of Parliament, took their oaths on Tuesday in a historic moment for the nation. This marks the first time since the deadly rebellion of 2024 that elected representatives have been sworn in.

Rahman is preparing to assume office from the interim government that has been running the country for the past 18 months, following the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s authoritarian government.

The newly elected MPs were sworn in by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, cementing the beginning of a new political chapter.

It is expected that members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will formally elect Rahman as their party leader. Meanwhile, President Mohammad Shahabuddin is scheduled to administer the oath of office to the Prime Minister and ministers later on Tuesday afternoon.

At 60 years old, Rahman, the leading figure of the BNP, secured a victory in the February 12 elections, signaling a shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape.

Rahman has pledged to restore stability and revive development after years of turmoil. He has also called for unity among all parties to overcome the deep polarization that has characterized the country’s political climate for years.
