Two Arrested for Unauthorized Access, Website Hacking, and Data Theft in Nepal

Jan 04, Kathmandu - The Nepal Police Cyber Bureau has arrested two individuals involved in unauthorized access to various government and non-government organizations' information systems, as well as website hacking and data theft.

According to a statement issued by the Nepal Police Headquarters' Cyber Bureau, incidents of unauthorized access to government websites and information systems have been ongoing for the past few months. These activities were reportedly claimed by groups such as ‘CMD Nepal’ and ‘Nepali for Nepal (NFN)’ through social media.

During investigations involving the Nepal Medical Council, the Department of National Identification and Registration, the Election Commission, and analysis by specialized cyber forensic experts, the involvement of two individuals was identified.

The suspects are identified as 20-year-old Santosh Chimariya from Mechinagar Municipality-1, Jhapa, and 19-year-old Bikash Poudel from Sangachowkgadhi municipality-1, Sindhupalchowk. Chimariya was arrested in Mechinagar on Friday, while Poudel was detained in Sangachowkgadhi on Saturday.

Recovered from their possession were four laptops, twenty Android mobile phones, one iPhone, one feature phone, one hard drive, and one repeater.

The Cyber Bureau stated that further investigations are underway in coordination with the Jhapa District Police Office and Sindhupalchowk District Police Office under the Electronic Transactions Act, 2006.
